Urinal

URINAL DE LA ESQUINA (A MARSEL O.) 2001

A corner in a street where people regularly urinated was selected as the site for installing a functional urinal. This piece references Fountain (1917) by Rrose Sélavy (Marcel Duchamp), recognizing the function of the corner and “returning” Duchamp’s piece to its original purpose before it became an art object, while also giving it a literal meaning by making the urinal a water fountain.

The piece was installed in Mexico City for a week, where it was used both as a urinal and a water source by many people. A second version was installed in Santurce, Puerto Rico, for a six-month period and was loved by many, especially the mailman.
